From Mechanic to Expat Entrepreneur: Why Leila and I Decided to Start Over in Greece.
Hi, I’m Alexandre—but everyone calls me Alex. I’m 35, and in this blog, I’ll share how my chaotic, unpredictable life led me to team up with Leila to create something meaningful: a platform to help expats thrive in Greece (and beyond).
My story isn’t your typical "success" tale. It’s messy, real, and full of detours—just like most expat journeys. If you’ve ever felt lost, burned out, or stuck in the grind, this might resonate.
The Early Years: TDAH, Dropout Dreams, and the Grind
I was the kid who couldn’t sit still. School? A nightmare—for me, my teachers, and my classmates (sorry, guys). Diagnosed with TDAH (ADHD), I thrived in chaos, not classrooms. So at 15, I dropped out to chase my dream: mechanics.
Reality check: I imagined myself on the Paris-Dakar Rally; I ended up changing tires in the muddy west of France. The dream lasted until I realized: I needed more.
Sales, Burnout, and the First Escape
By 20, I was a door-to-door salesman—long hours, terrible bosses, and a paycheck that didn’t justify the mental toll. First burnout. So I did what any self-respecting millennial would do: I ran.
Destination: Australia, 2011. No English, just hope. I worked every odd job imaginable:
Gardener
Window cleaner on skyscrapers
Server
Car wash manager
Lesson learned: The "Australian Dream" was overrated. But those jobs taught me resilience.
The Wanderlust Years: Asia, England, and the Hustle
I saved up and backpacked through Asia (Russia, Japan, Vietnam, South Korea). One truth hit me: I’d never live in France again.
Back in Europe, I landed in England—finally, a place where hard work paid off. I climbed the ladder in sales and football (semi-pro), but the corporate grind caught up. Six years in a multinational, selling out my values for money. Second burnout.
Brexit hit. The pound crashed. The stress skyrocketed. I quit and fled to Barcelona.
Barcelona: The Paperwork Nightmare
Finding an apartment? A scam. Getting a NIE (tax number), residency, healthcare? A bureaucratic hell. I did it alone—because no one offered help.
Five years later, I had a business, friends, and a life. But something was missing: community.
Lisbon, France, and the Final Straw
Lisbon: Same struggles—housing, paperwork, loneliness. I lasted 1.5 years.
Back in France at 32, I was VP of Sales in aeronautics. Good money, soul-crushing. I spoke 4 languages, had traveled most continents, and felt empty.
I quit again. Spent a year visiting 30+ countries. Then, Greece happened.
Greece: The Turning Point
I arrived in Thessaloniki and fell in love:
The culture, unbroken by centuries of empire.
The people—proud, poetic, alive.
The feeling of belonging I’d never had before.
I left for a year (got a useless Master’s in International Business—thanks, Mom’s wall!). But I promised myself: I’m coming back.
Meeting Leila: The Birth of Our Platform
When I returned, I met Leila. We compared notes:
Same struggles: paperwork, housing, isolation.
Same frustration: No one offered real help—or if they did, it was overpriced.
Our solution: A platform to connect expats with trusted local experts—at fair prices. Plus, we’ll share our raw, unfiltered experiences to help you avoid our mistakes.
Why Greece? Why This Platform?
Greece isn’t just a cheap place to live. It’s vibrant, romantic, and full of opportunity—if you know where to look.
Our mission:
✅ Save you time (no more bureaucratic nightmares).
✅ Save you money (no more overpriced "expat services").
✅ Build a community (because expat life is harder alone).
We’ve been there. Now, we’re here to make it easier for you.
